COURAGE: THE HIDDEN LAW OF HIGH PERFORMANCE
Courage Is Not the Absence of Fear.
It’s Action Through Truth.
A close friend and mentor of mine, Michael Dauphinee, recently shared something that stayed with me:
Courage = Action + Fear + Truth
Not action without fear.
Not confidence without doubt.
But action with fear… anchored in truth.
And when I let that sink in, I realised something:
Some of the most defining moments of my life were built exactly on that equation.
A Moment That Required Courage
In 2019, I made a decision that didn’t feel comfortable at all.
I was living in Virginia at the time, and I decided to move to Chicago.
No job secured.
Just interviews.
Just possibilities.
So I packed everything… and started driving.
And as you would expect:
Fear showed up.
Doubt started asking questions:
Am I ready for this?
What if I’m not good enough?
What if this doesn’t work out?
Up until that point, my life in the US had been structured.
University as an international student-athlete had been a kind of “bubble.”
There was support.
Structure.
Direction.
Now, I was stepping into real life.
No guarantees.
No safety net.
The Turning Point: Truth Over Fear
What changed everything wasn’t the removal of fear.
It was choosing truth over fear.
The truth was simple:
I had just graduated
I had built discipline through sport
I had adapted to a completely new country before
I was capable of learning, adjusting, and growing
There was nothing dangerous about my situation.
It was just new.
And growth lives in what is new.
So I acted.
I showed up to interviews.
I went to different locations.
I put myself in the room.
And the result?
I received yes from every opportunity I pursued.
Not because I felt fearless.
But because I acted despite fear, grounded in truth.
Why This Matters for Performance
Fear is not the problem.
Avoiding action because of fear is.
And most high performers don’t lack ability.
They hesitate because they let fear speak louder than truth.
Courage happens when:
Fear is present
Truth is clear
Action still happens
What This Looks Like in Your World
If you are a professional athlete:
Fear might say:“What if I fail on race day?”
Truth says:“I’ve trained for this. I’ve done the work.”
Courage is stepping onto the start line anyway — committed to competing fully.
If you are a CEO or leader:
Fear might say:“What if this decision is wrong?”
Truth says:“I have the information. I have the experience. I can adapt.”
Courage is making the call, communicating clearly, and leading forward.
If you are an entrepreneur:
Fear might say:“What if this doesn’t work?”
Truth says:“Every business is built through iteration, not certainty.”
Courage is launching, testing, learning, and adjusting.
A Practical Way to Apply This
Next time you feel stuck, don’t try to eliminate fear.
Instead, ask yourself three questions:
What action am I avoiding?
What fear is showing up?
What is actually true about this situation?
Then act from truth — not from fear.
Because fear will always try to protect you.
But truth is what moves you forward.
Final Thought
If I had listened only to fear, I would have stayed where I was.
Safe.
Comfortable.
Stuck.
Instead, I chose truth — and acted.
And that changed everything.
A Question for You
Where in your life is fear getting louder than truth… and what action would courage require from you right now?
